Engine heaters protect and heat the engine by heating the coolant and transferring heat to the engine through the coolant.

The heat transfer is carried out by means of a thermosiphon process (direct immersion heaters, tank heaters) or by means of an (integrated) circulation pump. (the most efficient preheating method, especially for engines with large coolant volumes).
