Remote Control Systems

As an integral part of BESI´s flow management systems, Control Systems for Remote Controlled Valves (RCV), Tank Level Gauging (TLV) and Anti Heeling System (AHS) are offered.

Control Stations

BESI designs and produces centralized and decentralized control stations for hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and electro-hydraulic systems. These control stations are designed according to the rules and requirements of all major classification societies and contain all necessary components, such as power packs, for safe operation of the system. All digital and analogue incoming and outgoing signals from the field components - like limit switches of the valves, tank level sensors, floating switches, or even local operator panels - are transmitted to I/O units, mounted in the centralized or decentrelized control cabinet(s). All I/O units are controller-based and have an Ethernet interface which provides the maximum number of communication channels and protocols. This keeps the system flexible in all the channels while opening the gate for decentralized designs.

Operator Stations

Specially designed computer-based operator stations operate and monitor the RCV, TLG and AHS systems. For the Engine Control Room (ECR), a class-approved fanless operating Touch Panel IPC (with no keyboard or mouse unit necessary) is available. This panel features flush-mounting on the control cabinet door. Other Operator Stations - for example in the Decks Office - operate with a speciallydesigned desktop computer complete with TFT colour monitor, mouse and keyboard. Each operator station is able to operate in a "stand-alone" mode. A software interlock with password levels is integrated to deny unauthorized access.

The operator / user panels (HMI) are based on a clearly arranged graphical overview. All functions are simple and menu-assisted, which provide maximum convenience to secure and save operations (see below some samples of screenshots).

Tank Level Gauging

Tank Level Gauging and Draft Measurement

BESI Marine´s TLG system is especially designed to gauge filling levels in tanks on-board vessels. To fulfill this task, various types of sensors are necessary. BESI-supplied sensors are specific to the application for which they are designed, because each medium is different in density and chemical aggressiveness to the sensor materials. Thus the sensors have special sealings, housing materials, different membranes and electronic components. The sensors are technology-based on the principle of a pressure transducer with a pre-set pressure range and tuneable output. The technology, basing on relative atmospheric pressure, requires the sensor to be vented. To provide this pressure equalization between sensor and environment, the sensors are equipped with special cables which have a pressure relief line.

Installed in the control cabinet are the analogue inputs (0-20mA) which are fed with the sensor signals presenting the actual medium pressure in the corresponding tank. A software in a PLC (Programmable Logical Controller) will translate the values from the sensors with the help of so-called tank tables into tank content values.

During its calculations of tank contents, the PLC considers medium densities (to be fed in by the system operator) as well as trim and heel corrections of the vessel. The system does not only calculate tank contents but also visualizes them in a very user-friendly manner.

Pressure Sensors

General description

The process pressure / hydrostatic pressure sensors are based on the principle of a transducer with a pre-set pressure range and adjustable output. The sensors can be installed "dry" outside the tank, or "submerged" in medium inside the tank. In both cases, the sensor should be installed approx. 10cm above the lowest bottom area of the tank.

Applications

  • Ballast water tanks, fresh water tanks, grey water tanks, black water tanks, sludge tanks.
  • HFO Storage tanks, HFO Settling tanks, HFO Service tanks.
  • MDO tanks, lube-oil tanks, cooling water tanks.

Tank Level gauging and Draft measurement for continuous level management

BESI´s Pneumatic Electronic Sounding System (PESS) has been designed as a Tank-Level and Draft sensor system for continuous level measurement on board vessels.

Installation

The versatile PESS sensor system provides measurement access from the top or from the side of the tank. It can be mounted close to or distant from the measuring point. The sensor is connected to the tank via a measuring pipe which is guided into the corresponding tank to a level of approx. 30mm above tank bottom. Approved by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and ABS, the tank sounding pipes can be used as PESS measuring pipes as well if they are closed airtight to prevent any leakage.

Design benefits

The PESS sensor system consists of a readyassembled and pre-adjusted sensor box with an air-throttle valve, a non-return valve, an electronic pressure transmitter, a stop-cock, and a test connection for testing the sensor even when the tank is empty.

Based on the principle of an air purge system (or "bubble system"), the measuring cell of the pressure sensor never makes contact with the liquids to be measured. The permanent air flow (bubbles) keeps the measuring tube permanently free from fluid and protects the pressure sensor against dirt and heat. This means that the PESS sensor will never be damaged or influenced by adherent sediments. Another important design benefit of the proximity measuring principle is that the medium temperature is totally irrelevant. Service to the system can be done from outside the tank.

Special Features and Adjustments

The throttle valve reduces the airflow to the tank or draft measuring point to approx. 10-20 l/h. The non-return valve - assembled with the gauge head - secures the air-circuit and the pressure transmitter against tank fluid flowing back into the pneumatic circuit in case there is a breakdown in air supply. The signal pick-off is rendered by an electronic pressure transducer with a ceramic sensor cell containing high purity aluminium membrane providing analogue signals 4-20mA which corresponds with the air pressure in the measuring pipe. The sensors are pre-calibrated and available in almost every range : with standard types for 4, 6, 10, 16 or 20m LC (liquid column).

Applications

Visualization of tank levels

The visualization of tank and draught levels is realized on an existing control panel of the RCV remote controlled valve system, ballast system, ship automation / alarm system, or as a standalone solution on a colour touch panel display. The panels are available from 10.4" up to 19". The TLG system can be used as a stand-alone application or as an integrated solution in the RCV system. The interface to the Alarm & Monitoring System (AMS) and / or ship management system is via RS485 or Ethernet. Both interface types are most common and, furthermore, are highly reliable and flexible.

BESI Anti-Heeling System (AHS)

The BESI Anti-Heeling System (AHS) can either be provided as a stand-alone system or as a sub-system integrated in the ballast control. The AHS provides manual or automatic heel correction to keep the ship on ?even keel? during cargo operation. The heel angle is measured by an inclinometer which generates a signal for the control system initiating the necessary actions to keep the vessel in a horizontal position. In automatic mode, the system operator can pre-select a heel angle of up to three degrees starboard or portside which is kept by the system automatically. The prevailing heel angle is indicated on the panel. However, all operations are interrupted when the heel exceeds five degrees, or when one of the limiting tank level sensors has indicated low or high water level. The AHS usually operates a pair (or multiple pairs) of anti-heeling tanks (portside and starboard) which are connected via cross-pipes. The nominal transfer rate of ballast water from one ballast tank to the other on the opposite side depends on the cross-duct diameter, tank height (max. water-head amplitude) and the capacity of the ballast pump. A stability test system is available as an optional feature, which is considered useful to specify and report the actual stability of the vessel, after discharging and/or loading operations.

AHS Configuration

Approved Design and Installation

The BESI AHS has been designed with flexibility to meet clients´ requirements: to operate as an independent system or as an integrated system with the anti-heeling sub-system incorporated into the ballast control. The multifunctional control system runs on various hardware configurations and can integrate several types of pumps. The flexibility of the system also allows the use of the ballast pump(s) and remote-controlled valves of the ballast system for anti-heeling operations.

Anti-Heeling Pump

The integrated system uses designated ballast pumps and assigned valves for anti-heeling operations. The independent AHS uses a reversible propeller Pump - available in different designs - or a centrifugal pump.
Valves

AHS operating independently from the ballast system requires two remote controlled valves (RCV). Each RCV assembly consists of a butterfly valve and an actuator moving the valve into the desired position.
Tank Level Sensor / Level Switch

For detecting actual tank levels, tank sensors and level switches are needed. If the AHS is designed as an integrated system, the tank levels are determined by the BESIsupplied Tank Level Gauging system. If it is an independent system, the following sensors are provided :

  •  For each Anti-Heeling tank, one pressure Sensor G1-D

  • For each Anti-Heeling tank, one level switch for detecting minimum water level

Motor Starter for Heeling Pump

Wall-mounted type installation: cabinet designed as DOL or Y/D MCC (Motor Control Centre). The cabinet is equipped with all necessary power distribution and control components.
Anti-Heeling Control Cabinet

Wall-mounted type installation: This cabinet is designed as the dedicated control cabinet and is equipped with all the necessary control components. On the front door, an operator panel is installed for monitoring and operating the system.
Example configurations include

  • A reversible in-line (tunnel) propeller pump in combination with two remote- controlled valves.
  • A reversible propeller pump in combination with two remote-controlled valves.
  • An unidirectional centrifugal pump in combination with a maximum of six remote controlled valves.
  • The existing ballast pumps (max. two) and the remote-controlled valves. For this application, an online connection to the remote controlled valve system is needed. The recommended standard interface is an Ethernet MODBUS connection (others on request).

Inclinometer

This sensor provides the calibrating input signal for the antiheeling control system. BESI recommends that this inclinometer be installed in the control cabinet which has to be mounted in transversal ship direction. If this is not possible, the inclinometer should be arranged transversally and rigid to the ship?s structure, in a small box near the control cabinet.

Operator Panel

This panel is designed to monitor and operate the AHS from remote position, for example, from the wheelhouse. The panel is prepared for flush mounting into an existing control console.

Stability Test

This feature is optional and comes with a printer for documenting the test reports. The testing procedure is based on the regulations of IMO. RES. A 749 (18) Chapter 7.3.1.

The BESI AHS is designed according to the Germanischer Lloyd (GL) rules and is also typeapproved by GL.

Quick Closing Valves

BESI Quick Closing Valves are designed with multiple execution release cylinders, which allow operation by manual (pulling wire), pneumatic and hydraulic execution. The BESI Quick Closing Valve can be delivered in various material compositions and with various flange drillings. Sizes range from DN15 to DN200 in standard, up to DN500 is possible on request. The BESI Quick Closing Valve release stations are equipped with a breakable window and emergency hammer.

Hydraulic Spring Return Actuator (Type HSTP - F)

BESI Marine Systems GmbH produces reliable and robust hydraulic single-acting spring return actuators.

Installation

The HSTP-F actuator may be installed in any place - submerged in medium, in dry spaces, on deck, or in hazardous areas.

Position Response

The valve position is determined by limit switches mounted externally on the actuator, or by volume transmitters installed inside the central control unit, such as the solenoid valve cabinet. The BESI volume transmitters are accepted by all major classification societies and are type-approved by Germanischer Lloyd (GL). They provide an inexpensive but very precise and reliable signal transmission and eliminate the need for any electric cabling to the valves. This ensures economic installation even in hazardous areas of a ship.

Emergency Operation

As a unique safety feature, the actuator provides a second independent piston for manual operation. It allows an emergency operation to be undertaken completely independent from the hydraulic circuit ? important in situations where the hydraulic circuit may be defective. For manual operation, a portable hand-pump can be connected to the actuator via a quick connector coupling.
The main advantages of the Type HSTP-F actuators include

  • Designed to ensure a defined fail-to-safe position - open or closed - even without control power.
  • Spring Discs instead of spiral springs are used to allow the actuator to operate even with 30% defective springs.
  • Economical installation - whether as single unit or ready-installed in a system - due to single-line connection. Single-acting ¼ -turn actuators need only one hydraulic supply pipe.
  • Operation of high oil pressure levels of 100 up to 135 bar, and up to 160 bar on request.
  • Small, compact overall dimensions.
  • Wide range of torques. Opening torques range from 190 Nm up to 7.730 Nm and closing torques from 100 Nm to 4050 Nm.

Hydraulic Double-Acting Actuator (Type HSTP - D)

BESI Marine Systems GmbH produces double-acting hydraulic actuators type HSTP-D.

These are high pressure actuators which benefit from the combination of high oil pressure levels of 100 up to 135 bar - on request up to 160 bar - and small overall dimensions as well as attractive torque rates.

Installation

The HSTP-D actuator may be installed in any place - submerged in medium, in dry spaces, on deck, or in hazardous areas. The actuator needs two hydraulic supply pipes For easy installation, we recommend endless pipes (8 x 0.5 stainless steel) from coil, preferably bundled pipes, comprising two or a multiple of two hydraulic lines.

The actuators are equipped with couplings for quick connection to a portable hand-pump for emergency operation. Actuators in medium have their control blocks for manual control installed outside the tanks, and are connected by hydraulic pipes.

Hydraulic Linear Actuator (Type HKV)

BESI Marine Systems GmbH produces single acting spring-closing hydraulic linear actuators - Type HKV - which can be fitted to several types of valves (such as globe stop valves, non-return valves, and valve chests).

Function

The hydraulic oil pressure (approx. 75 - 150 bar) moves the valve in the desired position (either open or closed) while the disc springs move the valve in the opposite position even against medium pressure.

Design

HKV-type single acting hydraulic linear actuators combine the advantages of a sleek design with the economic performance of a linear hydraulic actuator that assures reliability in virtually any surrounding.

Emergency operation

The standard design comprises a second piston for emergency operation by a portable handpump. There is also possibility for mechanical operation using a hexagon screw for opening the valve manually. This is available on request.

Additional equipment

The actuator may be complemented either with a mechanical position indicator (for dry mounted valves) or with electric limit switches for open-close position indication. The HKV actuator is available together with a corresponding valve - whether as a non-return valve, a stop-valve with fixed cone, or stop/ check valve with loose cone.

Options

  • Electric limit switch - with protection class IP65 or IP68
  • Potentiometer position indication
  • Assembly with directly mounted electro hydraulic power pack EHPP
  • Visual position indicator
  • Special coating

Electro-Hydraulic Power Pack (Type EHPP)

BESI Marine Systems GmbH produces small-sized electro-hydraulic power packs (EHPP) specially for BESI-developed hydraulic ¼ turn HSTP actuators as well as HKV linear actuators. These power packs are usually fitted directly onto the actuator, thus providing a hydraulically independent unit connected to the control cabinet only by electric cabling. For submerged installation, the power pack is mounted just outside the tank - in a dry environment, and connected to the actuator by hydraulic pipes. The EHPP unit is applicable for both doubleacting and spring-return hydraulic ¼ turn actuators as well as spring-load closing linear actuators. Under certain conditions, the unit may be used to serve a small group of actuators via a solenoid valve box - thus piping over long distances can be avoided.

Position response

Valve position is determined by electric limit switches mounted on the actuator, providing position indication to the control panel and also stopping the pump operation.

Emergency Operation

For emergency operation, the EHPP unit is equipped with quick connector couplings for connection to a portable hand-pump.

For actuators installed inside tanks, a control block with couplings is fitted outside tanks nearby and connected to the actuator by hydraulic pipes.

Options

  • mounting kit HSTP
  • mounting kit HKV
  • bracket for separate arrangement
  • limit switches
  • Ex-proof version potentiometer

Linear Pneumatic Actuators (Type PKV)

As a highlight of the product range, BESI produces pneumatic linear actuators of type PKV in single acting version. These reliable, robust and enduring actuators are typically installed on seat valves but may also mounted on valve chest.

Installation

BESI PKV actuators are normally supplied with a specified valve as one unit and may be installed in any dry location or on deck. In standard version, the actuator needs 10 bar air pressure supplied from one pipe. The spring return function enables the actuator to move the valve into a defined safe position without air supply.

Valve Position Indication

Upon request, PKV actuators are equipped with a local position indication through limit switch. A visual position indication may be realized. Remote position indication can be visualized and processed in decentralised and compact units or integrated into BESI RCV remote control and automation system.

Emergency operation

In case of air pressure failure, PKV actuators may be operated by a portable pneumatic compressor (PEC).
Option

  • Electric limit switch with protection class IP67
  • Valves of different sizes and materials are available
  • Adaptation to customer valves possible
  • Surface protection is in standard BESI blue, but at customers´ choise my be changed to other colours and paints.

Electric Quarter Turn Actuators (Type EST)

As part of the product range, BESI Marine Systems GmbH delivers electric quarter turn actuators of type EST. These are reliable, robust and compact actuators that may be used in all dry sections of the ship with a torque range up to 3000 NM. The type EST actuators combine the advantages simple installation, safe and reliable operation and easy control and maintenance.

Installation

BESI EST actuators may be installed in any dry location. The actuator only needs one electric supply cable – which in standard application, is also used for signal transmission. Upon request, the actuators are delivered ready assembled to a valve.

Position response

The EST actuators are equipped with limit switches and a visual local position indicator. For remote indication are potential contacts installed. The remote position indication can be visualized and processed in decentralised and compact units or integrated into BESI RCVremote control and automation system.
